4 Activities Seniors Can Enjoy At The Local Church

Activities Seniors

Seniors are often leaders in a church. They are likely to know all of the families in the congregation as well as the history of the church. These years of experience and history make for some great activities that seniors can do at church to further their understanding of the scripture and to enhance their ties to the congregation.

Bible Study

Seniors can participate in a bible study that meets before or after church. Weekday mornings or evenings are also popular times for bible studies. The group follows a particular schedule, reading a passage at home and then coming in to discuss the meaning. The passages might be seasonal such as reading about the birth of Jesus in December or the crucifixion in March.

Sunday School Classes

With their years of experience, understanding and reading the bible, seniors are a natural choice for leading Sunday school classes. Seniors can help put together activity packets and lessons for the youngsters in the church. They may even partner up with one senior per child, helping them to gain an understanding of important lessons in the bible. Children can read to the seniors and the seniors can help them with the more difficult words. This sort of activity can help to form friendships that promote the mental health and overall well-being of the church's oldest members.

Prayer Shawl Ministries

The idea behind prayer shawl ministries is to pray for the person or say prayers while making the shawl. The shawls may be knitted, crocheted, woven or even sewn. In some cases, the shawls are made in advance and then given to members of the congregation as needed, such as when a member loses a spouse or experiences an illness. Prayer shawl ministries often meet together in a group to do the stitching. Seniors who no longer do these crafts often contribute their expertise or the supplies that they no longer need.

Care Packages

Putting together care packages is another great way that seniors in a church can enjoy doing as a group. They can create care packages when a member is sick or has had a new baby. Another great care package option is a homeless care package. The seniors could fill plastic zipper bags with small toiletries, new pairs of socks and packaged snacks for the homeless. They can also go out and distribute the bags with other church members.
